The Reason I Can't Navigate My Way Through Korea

I know I told you that we "found" Costco this past weekend, but what I did not explain - possibly because I was already so tired - was the process of finding it. Costco lies on the other side of town from where I live, generally. Getting to the other side of Daegu takes all of 3 minutes by car...if you know where you're going. The trouble is figuring out where you're going. And the reason this is the trouble is because of the Korean address system.

In short, it is random. This is confusing not only because it is a non-Western way of doing things, but also because, let's face it, it's a silly way of doing things;) When I rented the car, I asked for a map and if the rental car attendant knew how to get to the address of Costco. She looked at a map for only a few seconds, looked up at me, shrugged her shoulders and said, "You know, we don't use addresses in Korea." That was the answer. That was the explanation. If a local doesn't know where it's located via landmarks, GOOD LUCK!

Thankfully, this system is soon changing! A much more detailed explanation into why it's difficult to get around this city can be found here...
